چکیده

Abstract Spotted cucumber beetle ( Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi ; also known as southern corn rootworm) is a pest feeding on many crops, including cucurbits, (maize), peanuts, beans, and other crops wild plants in North America. On cucurbit where it co-occurs with striped Acalymma vittatum ), both are key pests that vector Erwinia tracheiphila, destructive pathogen causes bacterial wilt. Here we deployed synthetic vittatalactone, the male-produced aggregation pheromone of A. , lures field, to measure attraction target non-target insects. Both sexes D. u. were strongly attracted vittatalactone (5–7.5-fold compared blank trap) throughout growing season Maryland Virginia, USA. Moreover, was more live males squash than females or without any beetles, confirming genuine organismal cross-attraction between these two pests. The kairomonal suggests functions “keystone semiochemical,” mediating colonization cucurbits by multiple herbivore species. Such cross could allow for use management species, potential reduction pesticide crops.

Beetle Resistance

Field studies were conducted in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate the effects of induced resistance in cucumber by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on numbers of the spotted cucumber beetle, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber, and the striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittatum (F.). Cucumber plant growth and yields were significantly (P<0.05) greater, and populations of cucumber beetl...

Lures and Traps

Cucurbitacin E glycoside, extracted from a bitter mutant of Hawkesbury watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai (Syn. It is the primary component of a water-soluble bait that can be combined with toxins for adult diabroticite control. Studies were conducted using phloxine B (...

Suppression of tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata) and cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum and Diabotrica undecimpunctata) populations and damage by vermicomposts

The effects of food waste vermicompost on populations of adult striped cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum) and spotted cucumber beetles (Diabotrica undecimpunctata) on cucumbers and larval hornworms on tomatoes (Manduca quinquemaculata) were evaluated in both greenhouse and field experiments as well as damage caused. In the field, cucumber and tomato plants were grown, with two different appli...

Applying imidacloprid via a precision banding system to control striped cucumber beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in cucurbits.

The striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittatum (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a key pest of cucurbit crops throughout its range. A novel precision band applicator was designed to inject a solid stream of imidacloprid solution in-furrow directly over the seed during planting to reduce beetle leaf feeding on pumpkin, zucchini, and cucumber crops. In 2004 and 2005, bioassays at the cotyledon...

European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Larvae~ and Striped Cucumber Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)l

J. Econ. Entomol. ii: 1144-1148 (1984) ABSTRACT Seed oils of many sapindaceous plants contain substantial amounts of cyanolipids. Several of these oils stimulated aggregation of the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), and the confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum (Jacquelin duVal). In a pitfall bioassay, they attracted the sawtoothed grain beetle and the rice weevil, Si...
